About Us
The structure of the Methodist Church is as follows; In Great Britain there are 33 Districts and together they make up what is known as the “Connexion." There is an annual conference, and representatives from the Connexion and the districts decide upon common policy. The President of the Conference is elected annually.
Each of the Districts has a District Synod.(or committee). They decide upon policy for the district based upon guidance from the Conference and Connexion.
Each of the districts is again split, into Circuits, which are made up from a number of local churches. It is in this way that strong links are built up and maintained around the country, and the world.
The Rev Laurence Potter, Minister of Standish Methodist Church
Standish Methodist Church, is in the Wigan Circuit, which is part of the Bolton and Rochdale District. Other local churches within the Wigan Circuit are; Blackrod, Shevington, The Vale, Crooke, Whitley, Gidlow,Goose Green,Queens Hall, Aspull, and Worsley Mesnes.
Until 1932 there were several different branches of the Methodist Church e.g. Primitive, United and Wesleyan. However, the `Deed of Union`of that year brought them all together, and acts as a key foundation document of the church today. It states;
“All those who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and accept the obligation to serve him in the life of the Church and the world are welcome as members of the Methodist Church”
